The retainers are appliances used to maintain the position of your teeth after the orthodontic treatment. Unfortunately, teeth move after the orthodontic treatment is completed, so wearing your retainer as instructed by the orthodontist is very important.

Always
bring your retainers with you to each appointment.

What should I expect after getting my retainer?

Your speech may sound funny for a few days, please practice by reading out loud or just speaking more with the retainer in your mouth.  You may also have more saliva production during the first 2-3 days.

The retainers should be worn all day and all night for the first 2 to 3 months after the completion of your treatment, except when you are eating, brushing, swimming, or when the sports mouth guard is in place. After this period of time you will have to wear retainers fewer hours per day.  This will be discussed later during your follow up visits to the orthodontist.

How do I take care of my retainer?

The retainer should be brushed with a toothbrush by scrubbing it with warm water on both sides. You may use soap or toothpaste.  You may also soak it in a denture cleaner (Polident or Efferdent) or a cup with Listerine to make them feel fresh.

The retainer should be always placed in the retainer case when it is not in your mouth, especially when you are in school, restaurant or any other public place.

If you have a dog, please do not leave your retainers where the dog can reach it.

The retainers can be lost or sometimes broken.  Sometimes, your retainer may not be fitting well or may hurt.  When this happens, please call our office as soon as possible. We often need to see you within 3-4 days to make another retainer.  There is a replacement fee for a new retainer.
