What should I expect?

Once the separators are in place, you will notice that you feel as though a piece of food is caught between your teeth. Usually within 4-6 hours after placement, the soreness from tooth pressure/movement will begin. The dull ache feeling will normally worsen over the next day or two, and will then subside. During those first couple of days, over the counter pain medication can be used to help with the pain.

What if a separator falls out?

The separators may fall out of the space once the teeth become separated. It is not a problem since the you will usually see me within a few days. Please check your separators by simply counting them before brushing.  Let us know at the appointment if you have lost any separators and how many. If you accidentally swallow a separator, do not worry, they will harmlessly move through the digestive tract.
